Dear HUSD families,

I am writing to inform you of the latest update regarding air quality and schools. Also, I am happy to let you know that we believe we will start classes again tomorrow morning at all sites.

This morning, I met with numerous superintendents from Sonoma County, the County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Herrington and Dr. Karen Holbrook, Chief Health Officer for Sonoma County Health Services to establish a county-wide standard for canceling classes due to air quality. During this discussion, Dr. Holbrook stressed that most students would be better off indoors at schools than at home, as our HVAC systems clean air more thoroughly and efficiently than the average home system.

After much discussion, we have established standards for school practices in regards to air quality. As we monitor the situation, final determination regarding canceling classes will be made early each morning and classes will continue unless the air quality is close to 275 on the Environmental Agency’s Air Quality Index. Thus, given current levels and forecasts, it is highly likely that all we will open for classes again tomorrow.

In anticipation of opening, we have gone through classrooms, vacuuming and wiping down surfaces to eliminate any particles from the extreme smoke event on Thursday through Saturday. We also are inspecting air filters and replacing as necessary. Finally, we do anticipate having an indoor schedule for the rest of the week, where students will eat and have lunch indoors. PE and athletic practices/games will also be modified as necessary.

If you do choose to keep your student home over the course of the next week because of air quality issues, please let your school office know and we will code the absence as excused.

I know this has been a long few days for all and we appreciate your patience as we ensure that our school environments are safe and ready for students and staff to reenter. I hope a return to our daily schedule will help bring a sense of normalcy for all. Please do not hesitate to send any questions or concerns to me directly at cvandenheuvel@husd.com or 707.431.3488

Sincerely,

Chris Vanden Heuvel

Superintendent

"The Healdsburg Education Foundation has launched a special campaign to raise funds for mental health services at Healdsburg High School in the 2018-2019 school year. Without this campaign, these services are at risk of being cut, and our students need us to come together and show them we care for their mental and emotional well-being. To donate, visit www.youcaring.com/HEFprojectsuccess. Please share this page with friends and family, our goal is $45,000 and we cannot do it without the support of our entire community.”

March 28th, 6:00pm at HHS Cafeteria

Above the Fray is a first of its kind program, proactively addressing the numerous issues young people face online, like sexting, social media, cyber bullying, gaming, and more. Our goal is to educate parents and teachers about what life is really like online for young people, and to give adults the tools they need to begin meaningful dialogues at home and at school. Our tangible, grounded, and easy to understand program is based largely on the startling findings from our Above The Fray youth focus groups, led by Dr. Shawna Malvini Redden, PhD.

On January 31st, at 6:00 pm, the high school will be hosting our 8th grade parents in the high school cafeteria to present this information to parents and answer any questions you might have.

Free math tutoring is now offered at HJH on Mondays and Tuesdays immediately after school in Room 2, and the tutoring runs for one hour. An HJH teacher will facilitate the after school math help. This is a great opportunity for students to get the extra math help they need! We are very excited to be able to offer this to our students.
